Varnish or Oil Finish

Varnish finish:

This is the strongest in terms of resistance to denting and liquids and is available in several finishes, gloss, satin or matte.
It does not require much maintenance but will have to be sanded every 10 to 15 years, depending on its usage.
This type of finish is highly recommended in shops and living rooms.

Oil finish:

It gives the wood a more authentic appearance but requires more maintenance.
During the first year the flooring will need to be oiled (using a rag) every three months and from the second year on, twice a year.
If the maintenance is properly done, no sanding will be necessary.
With a low resistance to liquids as well as denting, oil finishes will be recommended for rooms with less passage such as bedrooms.
